Stone Oak

Los Angeles, CA

Neglected but loaded with character, this 1962 post and beam house spoke to us instantly. Set atop a ridge in the Santa Monica Mountains, the meandering courtyard home is surrounded by mature oaks, with sweeping city and canyon views splayed out below. Glassy walkways stretch out to connect airy bedroom pavilions, while the living room and primary bedroom cantilever out amongst the tree branches. We took down walls separating the formal kitchen and dining spaces to let the landscape flow through and added a fourth bedroom to create a functional house for this busy family of five. A warm earthy palette of wood flooring and manganese ironspot brick complements the original heavy timber beams and connects the interiors to the shaded gardens beyond.
